SGUK Ep 169
The Crown in Crisis:
The Endgame:- Ego, Empire and Erosion
Hello, Ivy Here,
This week’s podcast is the last one in the Crown in Crisis mini series. A new series is lined up, commencing next week on Sunday 3rd August 2025 at the usual publication time on YouTube at 8pm (GMT)
This final podcast exploring the crumbling of the UK Monarchy as we know it, we have covered a wide array of topics, but rest assured that we are a long way from finishing just yet. UK Monarchy is the gift that keeps on giving, or should I say the grift that keeps on giving.
The framework for this weeks podcast is as follows:-
- What is left when the Veil Lifts? Now that the UK media attempts to portray in their tabloids that the Monarchy is allowing us into their world a little, trying so hard to send the message of how they try to interact and relate to the ordinary man and woman in the street. All I will say on that front is that the PR team need to revisit their notebooks. At this point, when one examines the resources allocated to give a certain impression to other Royals around the globe, when it is linked to publicity for the UK Monarchy, it is very hard to see why there is even an attempt to consider the approaches of Stability or Spectacle. The UK clearly has gone for Spectacle, despite the austerity measures being introduced on a frequent basis and the hardships and suffering being experienced by the citizens of the UK. This will be discussed further into this podcast, along with the self destruction of the Senior Royals club, one couple in particular, and then in panic mode, additional resources being used to use psychological warfare to turn ships around and force them back to the mayhem and internal conflicts out of duty. Ship sailed years ago and the anchor is more than set.
- Looking behind the metaphoric curtains of UK Monarchy, it shows no sign of improvement in status. In fact the lifting of the curtain shows even more clearly than expected the drama centred on the reducing influence and relevance of such a construct.
- The Monarchy’s Future: There was much talk around the new King’s plans for a Slimmed Down Monarchy. As per instruction it was lauded in UK press how the Monarchy under a new King, would reduce costs the UK tax payer, and explore ways in how this could be done. Royal Reporters relished in writing who would be removed from the line up, one couple in particular gave them such pleasure. Clearly based on assumption that all those on the gravy train of living in Crown properties and helping out the Senior Royals now and then would be so worried about being cut off from the grace and favours they currently enjoy, the Royal Reporters showed such glee at the prospect of keeping people hanging on hoping that they would remain in the fold. That is how UK Monarchy operates. Most fear stepping out into the normal world that most people occupy and experience, and this becomes one of the many holds that the Monarchy holds over people. The one thing in the arrogance in the media crowd trying to plant ideas in the heads of the public, as to who was at risk, was based on an assumption that the couple they had in mind, would be devastated to step outside the Royal bubble. Once again, UK Monarchy and its gossip writers failed to be able to read a room. The consequences of the misplaced bravado and cruelty in its constant delivery in the rags referred to as newspapers, would come back to haunt them for decades to come. The poor methodology of how the Senior Royals would be reduced, and the absolute own goal for the Firm to ignore decades of humans, including the Royals, getting older each day, and no concept of workforce planning or any form of strategy about what resources were needed and what outputs can be safely delivered/provided with that number of personnel, even when someone is on Leave or ill. Yet another own goal, and then to compound it, because of that lack of basic business planning decades before the problems would arise, has now led to a virtual collapse of what constitutes to be a Monarchy.
- Is it feasible and sensible to discuss scenarios for the monarchy’s future, including a possible “soft abdication” where powers are gradually diminished? Is any group in the
Establishment and the Rabbit in the Headlights Government that we have in the UK at the moment, ever going to even consider the William’s emotional immaturity & PR Desperation. The very visible daily meltdown and panic began the day the Sussexes walked away from a worsening toxic environment, and not a soul appears to be addressing this issue. Not a good look for the next King, and everyone knows it, except die hard Royalists who only see a “nice family” and everything else is ignored. The Firm also appears to be skirting around the issue. Red Alert daily indicator. The implications for the person, and the people around him, and the very serious issues it brings to the reputation of the UK (which is not great and popularity falling with the people who matter ie the citizens of the UK) Professional help may be needed to examine Prince William’s journey and perceived struggles with emotional maturity.
In the midst of an ongoing mental health crisis and rising inequality, a growing number of voices are questioning the role of the British monarchy. Many argue that the royal family serves as a symbol of entrenched social divisions, perpetuating a system that many believe is outdated and unjust. While some may view the monarchy as a comforting tradition, others see it as a stark reminder of the inequalities that plague society today. The sentiment is clear: the royals, with their opulent lifestyles, seem disconnected from the everyday struggles of ordinary citizens.
As people grapple with soaring energy bills and the rising cost of living, the lavish existence of the monarchy stands in stark contrast. It’s not that anyone expects the royals to live like everyone else, but a little empathy and solidarity during tough times could go a long way. When public services are being slashed and communities face financial strain, the monarchy’s extravagant lifestyle can feel out of touch. What kind of values does this promote?
Should we continue to uphold an institution where a select few enjoy unimaginable luxury while the rest of the population fights to make ends meet? Perhaps it’s time to entertain the idea of an elected head of state, one who embodies the democratic principles that Britain prides itself on. The monarchy, by its very nature, is undemocratic. It suggests that one’s worth is determined by birthright rather than merit. While the current royals may be well-liked, their positions are not earned through the will of the people.
This raises a critical question: how can a modern democracy justify an unelected head of state? The notion that some individuals are inherently superior because of their lineage is becoming increasingly untenable. Moreover, let’s delve into the financial aspect of the monarchy.
The sovereign grant, which funds the royal family, is a significant sum drawn from taxpayers’ pockets. Advocates claim that this investment fosters tourism and national pride, yet the costs associated with security and maintenance are substantial. Wouldn’t it be more beneficial to allocate those resources toward public services that directly impact the lives of citizens?
Transparency is another issue that looms large over the monarchy. The royal family often operates behind a curtain of secrecy, leaving the public in the dark about how their money is spent. While privacy is essential, when you’re funded by the taxpayer, there’s a compelling argument for openness. A lack of accountability only breeds suspicion and allows rumours to flourish, making it challenging to hold the monarchy responsible for its actions. The monarchy, whether intentionally or not, reinforces a class system that many find increasingly difficult to accept. It stands in stark contrast to the idea of a meritocracy, where success is supposed to be based on hard work rather than inherited privilege. In a society grappling with inequality, the monarchy can feel tone-deaf, perpetuating a narrative that some are simply born to rule.
Historically, monarchs wielded real power, but today, their role is largely ceremonial. The Monarch has become more of a national figurehead than a ruler with political authority. This raises the question: do we really need a monarchy for symbolic representation? There are surely less costly and more contemporary ways to embody national unity without the baggage of hereditary privilege.
As for the Commonwealth, the royal family’s position as its head is fraught with complications. While some view it as a force for good, others see it as a lingering reminder of colonialism. The monarchy’s involvement in the Commonwealth underscores the complexities of Britain’s imperial past, a history that many would prefer to move beyond. Despite attempts to modernize, the monarchy seems stuck in an archaic framework.
Social media engagements and photo opportunities with younger royals don’t change the fundamental issues at play. The challenge remains: how do you convince a populace that a system based on privilege is still relevant in an age striving for equality? The question of whether the monarchy is worth its financial and societal costs is increasingly debated.
While it may be seen as a cornerstone of British identity, the opportunity cost of maintaining such an institution is significant. Imagine redirecting those funds toward initiatives that promote education, healthcare, or environmental sustainability—now that’s a vision worth pursuing. Support for the monarchy is waning, particularly among younger generations disillusioned by scandals and the absurdity of royal life.
The idea of a republic, once considered radical, is gaining momentum. As societal values shift, the monarchy must reckon with the reality that its relevance is under scrutiny. Britain stands at a crossroads. The monarchy has been a fixture of British life for centuries, but just because something has always existed doesn’t mean it should continue unchallenged.
As a nation that prides itself on democracy and fairness, it’s time for a serious conversation about the future of the monarchy. Do we cling to outdated traditions, or do we embrace a future where equality and meritocracy reign? The choice is ours to make.
- Inside The Kate Middleton Crisis And The Silence At Kensington Palace is misplaced after two years and counting soap opera antics and poor production quality and content, at vast expense to the UK taxpayers, has not and continues not to be any improvement. Now the latest narrative is to hide behind emotive headlines and descriptions, but continue with the pick and mix approach with just enough frequency to satisfy the Royalists, but the monthly holidays are not making the KP crew any more believable than using cloak and dagger techniques to distract from the reality. It is taking the general public to be fools, and we are not.
- Maintaining privacy while disclosing information is a tricky balance. It involves careful consideration of what is shared, how it is communicated, and when it is disclosed. Maintaining individual privacy while tempering public expectations for private information is crucial. For entities like the Royal Family, not typically known for transparency, it can be difficult to establish or regain credibility and public trust. The only time the palace machine tries to stay quiet and then has to come out and say something, is when whatever incident or event only occurs when it could possibly include a senior Royal. It is amateur of any PR team to name a senior Royal NOT being involved in anything, before anyone was spending any time trying to be Inspector Poirot spending precious time on an incident that meant nothing to 99.9% of people. To then ask RRs to put out a statement (all of them saying the same things on the same day) was amateur hour. Now, anything that occurs from that day, has a posse of people playing detective. Own goal.

Psychology Note: Legacy vs. Control – The Narcissistic Need to Preserve Image Even as Relevance Fades
What is a legacy in psychology?
- The notion of a legacy is a concept that is only meaningful and emergent in a context where a person’s behaviour has implications for other people in the future. The presence of both the components of ‘otherness’ and ‘future-ness’ is fundamental to the conceptualization of legacies.

What are controlling behaviors?
- Controlling behaviors refer to actions and attitudes exhibited by individuals to maintain power and dominance over others. These behaviors are often characterized by an excessive desire to control, manipulate, or influence the thoughts, actions, and emotions of others, leading to a lack of autonomy and freedom for the person being controlled.
Conclusion: Recognizing the Narcissistic Pattern
The question many people ask is, “Why this level of obsession with a false image?” In truth, narcissists fear exposing the deeply buried shame and self-hatred lurking beneath their well-crafted façade. Their personality structure relies on external sources of worth. They may fiercely cling to that façade because it keeps their insecurities at bay.
By recognizing these narcissistic patterns—whether in a loved one or within ourselves—we can begin to navigate relationships more effectively. For those living with, or caring for, a narcissist, it helps to set firm boundaries and avoid fueling their compulsive need for admiration. Those with narcissistic traits who genuinely seek to change may find that therapy can peel back the layers of defense, creating space for healthy self-reflection and deeper emotional growth.
Awareness is the first step. Understanding the root causes of narcissistic obsession—childhood wounds, unresolved guilt, projected self-hate, and the frantic pursuit of external approval—explains why their actions often feel so irrational. Knowledge empowers us to protect our own well-being while also encouraging empathy for the pain that drives the narcissist’s choices. Although change may be slow and arduous, recognizing the pattern remains a vital key.
We must remember that no individual was born a narcissist. Environmental factors, formative experiences, and learned coping techniques usually coalesce to produce these traits. While this does not excuse harmful behavior, it does remind us that growth and healing are possible. Narcissism is a formidable defensive system that locks away shame and pain. When challenged and understood properly, this system can be replaced with genuine self-awareness, empathy, and a sense of security that doesn’t require a false image to survive.
